What is a Silica Exposure Plan?

A Silica Exposure Plan is a document that establishes a plan identifying tasks involving potential silica expose along with methods to protect personnel and equipment.

Silica (also known as Silicon dioxide) is a common mineral found in the earth’s crust. When workers are grinding, drilling, cutting, or removing natural materials they may encounter silica which can be very dangerous - causing permanent damage like silicosis (scarring of the lungs which makes breathing difficult), tuberculosis, or lung cancer. Materials that may contain silica include (but are not limited to):

  • asphalt
  • brick
  • cement
  • concrete
  • dry wall
  • fiber cement
  • grout
  • gunite/shotcrete
  • mortar
  • paints
  • plaster
  • refractory mortar/castables
  • refactory units
  • rock
  • roof tile (concrete)
  • sand
  • soil
  • stone
  • stucco / EIFS
  • terrazzo
  • tile (clay and ceramic)

Because of the risks with working with silica, a significant amount of preparation and planning must go into working with silica related projects. A typical silica exposure plan will walk the team through the potential producers of silica and what control methods will be used to eliminate the hazard.
